The Next Step . . . My novel is done and now I’m reading poetry once again. It’s funny every time I finish something I always strive to work to be better. I will never think I’ve made it. For what is it? For that is what I care not to know. Anyway I’m reading poetry now, trying to get to my next level. And I know I have to go back and relearn some basics . . . Those I forgotten along the way, the likes of spelling, grammar and simple poetry basics. They have become the causalities of this man’s war. I’ll work to fix that. A poet is a word minstrel and must strive to be the best he or she can be. But throughout time who was the best? Ay, that’s the rub, is it not . . . Every poet, every word slinger reaches his own best and then they die or write no more. To compare a Dylan Thomas to Tennyson or Yeats to Byron or Whitman to Frost is ridiculous . . . And yet today so many try. They just don’t get it. Each of us will only reach the level we seek, no higher, no greater. Currently, I’m reading Robert Bly and I’m loving his words . . . I’ve written about him. And several have said to me, that another poet was better . . . How can any poet be better than another? Each of us travels our own path, each of us has been molded differently through culture, local color, what ever you call it, its been done to us. Maybe what they meant to say, “I really love the words of . . . “ And that I can agree with, whole heartedly. I don’t like critiques. Though I love people with opinions about my work . . . I don’t like pretentious behavior, even if it is only perceived. And sometimes I’m sure others think of me that way . . . Nothing could be farther from the truth. I will never forget that once my idea of drawing was a simple stick figure. That is until I learned to make a pencil dance on the page. To see every thing with a new light and now my drawings are with words . . . My wish for you and everyone is to have a Joyous and Happy Holidays . . . Merry Christmas and Happy New Year . . .
